In the months leading up to the high-profile slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York, accused killer Luigi Mangione was living nearly half a world away — in a high-rise condo in Honolulu, Hawaii, The Post has learned.
The nearly 1,000-square-foot corner unit at 801 South St. it features two bedrooms, two bathrooms and sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. The monthly amount he paid is not clear, although some listing portals, such as Zillow and Redfin, estimate he was renting for around $4,000 a month.
Built in 2017, records show the unit is owned by Peter and Nam Joun, who bought it for $745,500 in 2021.
Lease transactions for the apartment were handled through a property management company, and a source close to the Joun family told The Post they were unaware Mangione was their tenant.
Peter Joun, the source said, is overseas in Japan and has not commented on the case.
It’s unclear whether Mangione, who says she moved into the apartment in February, had a roommate or lived alone.
Several representatives of the management company, Marcus Realty, did not respond to The Post’s requests for comment. The Honolulu Police Department did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
Before this address, Mangione rented a room at The Surfbreak, a co-living space in Honolulu where he paid $2,000 a month.
His former owner at Surfbreak told The Post that Mangione was in constant pain from a pinched nerve and a “spinal misalignment” after a surfing accident in the Aloha State.
Described as optimistic and accomplished by a former owner, Mangione had a promising background as a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania — UPenn being an Ivy League school — and engineer. He was also valedictorian of his high school in Maryland.
Investigators are now looking into Mangione’s movements and mindset leading up to the murder.
Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s on East Plank Road in Altoona, Pennsylvania on December 9. He was found with a manifesto accusing health insurance companies of corporate greed.
Mangione’s apparent anger at the industry is fueling speculation about the CEO’s motive for death.
