Each week, Alexa is rounding up the buzziest fashion awards, hotel openings, restaurant debuts and popular cultural events in NYC. It’s our curated guide to the best things to see, buy, taste and experience around town.
What’s making our luxury list this week? Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo both debut new Madison Avenue boutiques, John Mulaney is back on Broadway, and the Brooklyn Museum goes for the gold.
Michael Kors has moved its Collection boutique from 790 Madison Ave. at 667 Madison Ave., at the corner of 61st Street, in a space formerly occupied by Smythson. The move marks the East Coast debut of the designer’s new store concept for his Collection boutiques. Everything is on one level (versus two before), and the design, Kors said, “has a welcoming feel, a sense of luxury and refinement.” On offer: handbags, accessories and ready-to-wear from the Michael Kors Collection, with a shoe salon and seating in the back of the store and expanded fitting rooms. Jimmy Choo is also on the move, moving a few blocks down Madison Avenue to its new storefront at 667. Its interior was entrusted to London- and New York-based interior designer Nebihe Cihan, who created a trio of furnished lounges with vintage pieces from Luigi Pellegrin, Antonio Citterio and Móveis Cimo, thus introducing the brand’s “renewed retail aesthetic”. Now in store: the Winter 2024 collection for men and women, as well as eyewear, leather goods, fragrance, jewelry and an edition of the wedding collection. Jimmy Choo’s exclusive Made-to-Order service will also be available, where customers can customize their dream shoes or bag. JimmyChoo.com
After 12 years on the Lower East Side, Pig & Khao has opened a second location on the Upper West Side at 433 Amsterdam Avenue, between 80th and 81st Streets. The acclaimed restaurant’s kitchen is led by chef Leah Cohen, who draws inspiration from her training and travels throughout Thailand and Vietnam (her mother is Filipino, her father is Romanian-Jewish; she grew up with the traditions of both). The menu is a mix of Lower East Side favorites with a variety of new dishes exclusive to this location. Worth noting: This place is bigger than the original, with 54 seats in the dining room, a six-seat chef’s counter, 12 seats at the bar and 24 seats outside. PigAndKhao.com
This exhibition, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Brooklyn Museum, features over 500 gold objects from jewelry to fashion, paintings, sculptures and film. It’s a fascinating journey, especially for fashion lovers, as pieces by Anna Sui, Christian Dior, Gianfranco Ferré, Giorgio di Sant’Angelo, Halston, Mary McFadden, Walter Van Beirendonck and Yves Saint Lauren are displayed alongside jewels by Alexander. Calder, Belperron, Cartier, Charles Loloma, Jacob & Co and Verdura. There is a prototype necklace made for Elizabeth Taylor for the movie Cleopatra, a chain dress made by Azzedine Alaïa for Tina Turner, and a life-size 18-karat solid gold sculpture of model Kate Moss in a yoga pose. Starting this week, and for just 10 weeks, comedy fans can see a rotating cast of “some of the funniest people on earth” in All In: Comedy About Love by Simon Rich, “a series of stories about dating, heartbreak, marriage and things like that.” For the first 5 weeks, John Mulaney will lead the cast and will be joined by Fred Armisen, Renée Elise Goldsberry (12/11 – 12/30), Chloe Fineman (1/2 – 1/12), and Richard Kind. “Even though the show is all over the country, it’s meant to tell a simple story: that the most important part of life is who we share it with. We hope everyone will relate to it, even if it was their idea of dating and they’re starting it from a place of quiet anger,” says a very funny statement about the show. Tickets at AllInBroadway.com.
